When IP is 1, it can prevent the solids larger than 50 mm, When IP is 2, it can prevent the solids larger than 12mm, just the size of our finger, When the IP is 3, it can prevent the solid objects larger than 2.5mm, When the IP is 4, it can prevent the solids larger than 1mm, such as a stripping wire. When the IP is 5, it can prevent dust entering. When the IP is 6, it is completely protected against the dust.
About the second "X": When IP is 0, it is unprotected. When IP is 1, it protects against water dripping down vertically. When the IP is 2, it can prevent the shell damage from the vertical direction to 15 degrees of the spray water. When the IP is 3, it can prevent the vertical direction to 60 degrees of the spray water. When the IP is 4, no matter from which direction the water is splashed, it will not enter the shell. When IP is 5, when low-pressure water is applied in any direction, no harm will be caused to the connector. When the IP is 6, you can apply high pressure water to it from all directions, which is suitable for inside of the boat working environment, When the IP is 7, there will be no problem if put it into the water for a short time.
